AB  - Pierrot is unique among the theatrical fixed roles for having two diametrically opposed characters, one comic, the other cruel. The latter is usually thought to be an invention of the ‘Décadent’ artistic movement at the end of the nineteenth century, but it has earlier roots, influenced by early nineteenth-century melodrama, and promoted by perhaps the greatest mime actor of modern times, Deburau.
