Whereas the mythological Hercule is the incarnation of a strong virility (andreia), Rotrou’s Hercule finds himself tested–in war and in love. Being “reborn” as a virile and tender hero, this protagonist appeals to the taste of a gallant public and becomes the ideal character of the classical love tragedy.
