It first focuses on the “dances in characters,” and then on the ballet programs of the “ballet pantomime” in the second half of the century, through which ballet masters became writers. Finally, it studies the way these projects began to take shape in the conventions and rules of such an institution as the Paris Opera, which granted a specific status and payment to the ballet masters as writers.
