AB  - The two unpublished pieces by Sartre appearing in this issue, Empédocle and the Chant de la Contingence, are part of a complex web of attempts at writing literature dating from 1926-1927. This article brings together all the information pertaining to these unpublished texts and to their connection with Une défaite, a novel Sartre wrote in 1927, whose hero was supposed to write a version of the Empédocle story. It also describes the actual manuscripts and the rules used during their transcription.
