AB  - Paul Gauguin, like his contemporaries, read Ernest Renan, whom he did not appreciate very much, as shown by his ironic remarks about the author of the Life of Jesus. But he appears to have been particularly preoccupied with religion, and if he was not directly influenced by Renan he, like many of his contemporaries, felt his imprint, which he transposed into his work.
