AB  - Caliban and L’Eau de Jouvence are philosophical dramas, but they also testify to Renan's theatrical sense and tangible dramatic qualities. This original dramatic work shows how Renan assimilated the principles of Romantic and Symbolist drama. In this regard, Renan's two Shakespearean plays are less a matter of philosophical dialogue than of a new drama of thought, conceived as a space for poetic experimentation in the service of reflection on the human condition.
