It is likely that Montaigne then shared the republicanist convictions of the Discourse. However, his attitude changed in the Essays. He gave up publishing the Discourse, but he asked the same question, that of voluntary servitude. However, he modifies its meaning and response: republicanism gives way to an ethos that can be described as proto-liberal.
