AB  - This essay is intended to recover parts of the dialogues with the Cynical tradition carried out by Michel de Montaigne and Robert Burton. Neither of the two followed this tradition all of the way, but they did engage in productive borrowing and debate, agreeing and disagreeing with the different ancient Cynics as it suited their purposes in their analyses of the illnesses of the body, illnesses of the mind, and illnesses of the state.
