AB  - In the thirteenth century, Latin Christian elites settled in Egypt. This is particularly true of the Venetian and Genoese merchant communities. They formed an elite whose members, with their wealth and connections, occupied an important position and supported the economy through the Mediterranean in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These elites lived with a legal and political status that put them on an equal footing with the Muslim subjects of the sultan.
