AB  - This article studies the various ways in which Mark Robson’s film Bedlam (1946) may be called Hogarthian, from the literal citations of the artist’s works to the subversive spirit of its plot inherited from Hogarth’s humanitarian concerns. Repositioning Bedlam within a period of global turmoil and calls for reform of mental health facilities in the US, this essay argues that the film also claims a more profound and political debt to Hogarth’s critical gaze.
