TY - EJOUR TI - A tyrannical “I”? What Sartre and Celine can tell us about “extreme” cinema T2 - Écrans 2017 – 2 et 2018 – 1, n° 8-9. Le cinéma ou la nouvelle expérience de l’art DO - 10.15122/isbn.978-2-406-09246-9.p.0193 SN - 2491-2557 AB - This article examines so called « extreme » cinema in relation to Céline’s novels and Sartre’s Qu’est-ce que la littérature?. Insofar as he creates and maintains an aggressive and violent relationship to the reader, the Celinian narrator is a tyrannical « I » that interrogates and undermines the democratic model of readership theorized by Sartre. Céline also highlights and informs the aesthetic choices of such extremely violent films as Irréversible (Gaspar Noé, 2002).
