AB  - There exists an extensive bibliography on the subject of death and the cinema, addressed from a historical, aesthetic as well as ethical point of view. The aim of the present chapter therefore is to interrogate the paradoxical proximity between the invisibility and hyper-visibility of death on screen on the one hand, and cinema’s capacity to recreate the conditions and experience of a collective mediation for “ordinary” death on the other. This issue of mediation is rarely explored, yet it relates to one of the great topoi of media studies today: that of the death of the cinema itself.
