AB  - In Die Forschungsreise des Afrikaners Lukanga Mukara ins innerste Deutschland (1912/13) and Der Europäer: eine Fabel (1918), Hans Paasche and Hermann Hesse, respectively, criticise white Europe from a supposedly Black perspective. Drawing on critical whiteness studies and imagology, this article examines to what extent the meta-images of Europe in both texts go beyond literary blackface and represent early white European approaches to critical whiteness.
