Varia DO - 10.48611/isbn.978-2-406-14197-6.p.0193 SN - 2780-2523 AB - This article explores a contemporary appropriation of Euripides’ Medea by Marina Carr in By the Bog of Cats... (1998) from the perspective of feminist tragedy. Through the comparison of the two plays, it highlights Carr’s subversion of the classical construction of female stage characters that places women at the centre of tragedy. This approach disrupts the initial purpose of tragedy to deliver a political comment on women’s situation in contemporary Ireland.
