AB  - This article investigates the existence and the nature of the poetry which is traditionally attributed to King Francis I. It recalls the historic circumstances for this attribution and examines the role that critics played in the creation of Francis’ corpus of poetic texts, recorded in a series of manuscript albums. As a material history, these works are reevaluated in order to explain the origins of this misconception, and the reasons for its tenacity.
