Adapting the tropes of classical epic, the poets Ugolino Verino and Giovanni Michele Nagonio rushed to prepare deluxe manuscripts of their verse for the kings in which they recast the royal invaders as the heroic successor of Charlemagne with the hope of diverting their attention from Italian conquest towards a crusade to liberate Jerusalem.
