While the prefaces of novels printed between 1480 and 1530 evoke the traditional topos of utility and pleasure, some texts published in the mid-sixteenth century propose a more precise conceptualization. This is true for the reflections put forward by Jean Maugin in his Palmerin d’Olive of 1546 and Nouveau Tristan of 1554.
