AB  - The French sixteenth century did not develop a theory about the chivalric romance, elaborating only some sparse reflections. While the prefaces of novels printed between 1480 and 1530 evoke the traditional topos of utility and pleasure, some texts published in the mid-sixteenth century propose a more precise conceptualization. This is true for the reflections put forward by Jean Maugin in his Palmerin d’Olive of 1546 and Nouveau Tristan of 1554.
