AB  - One of the arguments in support of synonymy involves an approach to variation which presupposes a division into “varieties”: we then consider equivalences of meaning, the choice of one form rather than another depends on the variety used. This presupposition is put to the test from the study of verbs associated with “youth language”. It is shown that the principle of co-variation prevents lexical innovations from being understood as neologisms.
