On Christmas Day 1941, following the execution of a hundred Jewish hostages, Claudel wrote a letter to the Chief Rabbi of France, Isaiah Schwartz, in which he cited words of consolation from the two Testaments. This letter was immediately distributed as a leaflet especially in Drancy camp and that caused serious trouble to Claudel.
