AB  - This article attempts to show how Michel de Montaigne was introduced as an educational reformer in China during the first thirty years of the 20th century. Through Japanese translations, Montaigne's educational ideas and the two main chapters concerning the education of children in Book I of the Essays gradually entered the intellectual horizon of China. Montaigne is thus part of a list of canonical Western pedagogues.
