AB  - The visual dimension of Montaigne's writing is not just a metaphor. The notion of gaze provides an example of a dynamic and complex relationship between the eye and the object of its attention, and can account for certain uses of images in the Essays. The rhetorical analysis of this visual presence in Montaigne’s prose hardly accounts for the heuristic and solipsistic value of these singular uses. The question of image is examined in terms of therapeutic virtue or macabre fascination.
