AB  - There are two contradictory definitions of health in book III of the Essais. At times a criterion of superiority, health is part of the noble ethos. At times a state of lesser illness, it denotes an Augustinian perspective, which understands the human condition as fundamentally ill, estranged from Nature. For the body, less completely separated from Nature than soul, pleasure is a reliable sign to assess health. It does not work any more for the « inner health ». Only remain humor and irony.
