In the political writings published between 1620 and 1623, his exile enabled him to define Protestant action in the national and international war; in Sa vie à ses enfants, the terminal exile he assumed was a devotio. The composition of the correspondence reveals the dissensions, the latent conflict between public and private allegiances, and the desire to conceal them. Exile is less a loss of origins than an entry into ambiguity.
