AB  - Meigret’s spelling in his 1550 Tretté differentiates the reflexes of medieval palatal [ʎ] according to whether they are word final (travail) or internal (travaille). This article examines the evidence from all known sixteenth-century authors born in Lyon's area of influence, and concludes that Meigret’s distinction corresponds to genuine differences in the pronunciation of the varieties of French spoken in this region.
