AB  - Is joy really lacking in the world depicted in À rebours? Beyond the euphoria, the passions tasted by Des Esseintes are geared toward joy made of plenitude. But while the worldly substitutes for it are numerous, it is appropriate for the character to find it in spaces neglected by naturalistic writing: stars, a contemplative attitude, hypersensitivity to art, manifest a form of joy accessible to Des Esseintes. Hence, isn’t the novel something that can re-enchant any reader?
