A Voice for the Partisans Natalia Ginzburg, Translator and Writer in the Post-War Years

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Women and Translation in the Italian Tradition
  • Author: Franco (Teresa)
  • Abstract: A prolific writer and insightful chronicler of Italy’s political turmoil during fascism and the post-war years, Natalia Ginzburg was also a fine translator. This chapter reconstructs the meaning and function of translation in the early stages of her career and discusses the influence her translation of Igor Markevitch’s short war chronicle Made in Italy (1946) played in helping Ginzburg develop a more inclusive narrative voice and in the genesis of her 1952 novel Tutti i nostri ieri.
