Gilles Louÿs, “Ultimate explorations, moving past the self: Extreme journeys”
The fascination for the extreme communicated by travel narratives bears witness to the cultural valorization of risk-taking in postmodern societies. This phenomenon, which psychiatry connects to a certain way of being in the world–or which anthropology explains as the imaginary of a relationship with death, is described by many travelers as the crossing of the double limit that separates humans from a reality that exceeds them and from the part of the unknown that they seek to discover in themselves.
Keywords: experiences, exploit, adventure, travel literature, cinema, ordeal, psychoanalysis
286Rachel Bouvet, “The desert, an extreme space in Isabelle Eberhardt”
This article explores the various forms of radical otherness in the Écrits sur le sable by Isabelle Eberhardt (1877–1904), which bear witness to a strong propensity to go to extremes. Narratives about traveling in the Sahara are examined in turn from geographical (the desert as an extreme space), cultural (wandering, nomadism, and sedentariness), religious (Islam and Sufism), sexual (feminine/masculine) and social (predilection for the margins) perspectives.
Keywords: Algeria, identity, frontier, Otherness, gender, landscape, wandering
Jan Borm, « À la recherche de l’Ultima Thulé. Quelques voyageurs contemporains dans le Nord-Ouest groenlandais »
Le présent article montre comment le mythe de l’Ultima Thulé est réinvesti dans deux récits de voyage britanniques contemporains, The Ice Museum de Joanna Kavenna et The Polar North : Ways of Speaking, Ways of Belonging de Stephen Pax Leonard, consacrés à l’évocation du Nord-Ouest groenlandais, la région la plus septentrionale au monde habitée par l’homme.
Mots clés : Groenland, Arctique, nord, Inuit, Jean Malaurie, géographie, ethnographie
Jan Borm, “Looking for Ultima Thule. Some contemporary travelers in Greenland’s Northwest”
This article shows how the myth of Ultima Thule is recycled in two contemporary British travel stories, The Ice Museum by Joanna Kavenna and The Polar North: Ways of Speaking, Ways of Belonging by Stephen Pax Leonard, dedicated to evoking Northwest Greenland, the world’s northernmost region inhabited by man.
Keywords: Greenland, Arctic, North, Inuit, Jean Malaurie, geography, ethnography
Jean-Xavier Ridon, “Sylvain Tesson, the extreme as the conquest of nostalgia”
Looking at Sylvain Tesson’s text and film about his stay next to Lake Baikal, this study shows how the extreme is inseparable from a nostalgia for a time when there were still geographical areas to discover. In this sense, Tesson reproduces a model of conquest that does not avoid repeating a neocolonial ideology that the traveler’s discourse claims to want to question.
Keywords: Siberia, frontier, nostalgia, romanticism, ecocriticism, Robinsonade, travel writing
Gilles Louÿs, “In the deep forest. Three French travelers on the edge of shamanic experience”
With its point of departure a comparison of the stories of Raymond Maufrais (Aventures en Guyane, 1952), Olivier Germain-Thomas (Le Bénarès-Kyôto, 2007) and Raymond Figueras (Au pays des hommes-fleurs, 2010), this article shows how the tropical forest, grasped both as environment and physical “being,” holds travelers in its grip to the point of triggering visions and “journeys” close to the shamanic model.
Keywords: Laos, Mentawai Islands, shamanism, ethnology, road diary, survival, ordeal, sensory overload
Raphaël Piguet, “Between the sertão’s lines. Claude Lévi-Strauss’s shamanic ‘Writing lesson’”
This work proposes a textual analysis of the “Writing lesson” from Tristes tropiques, whose critical reading by Jacques Derrida marks a milestone. He shows that the “grammatological” study by the latter, extracting it from its viatic context, obscures the extremely spatial aspect of Levi-Strauss’s narrative, thus masking the real significance of a paradoxical literary object: writing to condemn writing means behaving like an octopus or a shaman; it is, after all, a very natural reaction.
Keywords: ethnography, Mato Grosso, desert, shamanism, Nambikwara, magic, myth
289Samuel Thévoz, “On the edge of a mystery. From Ceylon to Tibet, David-Neel, Segalen, and Buddhism”
The concurrent discovery of the Tibetan border by Alexandra David-Neel and Victor Segalen evokes in their work an imaginary of space where sacred theatricality and lived experience are inextricably bound together. But the interest that the two writers brought to Buddhism innervates, from Ceylon in the first decade of the century to Tibet on the edge of the War, their Asian peregrinations. Buddhism therefore plays a decisive role in the evolution of their literary approach.
Keywords: tantrism, spirituality, Far East, theatre, Buddha, symbolism
Valérie Boulain Renaud, « “Il me restait l’Aventure…”
Valérie Boulain Renaud, “‘Il me restait l’Aventure…’ Women travelers and the extreme (1918-1939)”
Reading the stories of extreme women travelers, this contribution studies the function of risk and challenge in the mechanisms of identity construction of the women of the interwar period.

Emmanuelle Sauvage, “The red and the white. Raymonde Carasco in the Land of the Tarahumaras”
Between 1976 and 2001, Raymonde Carasco made eighteen trips to Mexico with her husband, Régis Hébraud, who posthumously published the fifteen travel diaries written by his wife (Dans le Bleu du ciel, 2014). In the beginning, she set off following the footsteps of Eisenstein and Artaud, but we must look especially at the transformation she underwent after coming into contact with the Tarahumara Indians and initiation into peyote and shamanism in order to investigate the clues from an extreme and extraordinary journey.
Keywords: visual anthropology, rite, sacrifice, shaman, indigenismo, Jíkuli, initiation
A journey and testimony (on Fukushima by Michaël Ferrier)”
In Fukushima. Récit d’un désastre (2012), Michaël Ferrier tells the story of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011. This article, focused on the second part of the book, where the narrator tells of his journey up the Pacific coast of the Archipelago, analyzes this text as a travel narrative, to show how literature can and must rely on experience (of oneself and others) to witness a human catastrophe while inventing a new language.
