Abstract: With its point of departure a comparison of the stories of Raymond Maufrais (Aventures en Guyane, 1952), Olivier Germain-Thomas (Le Bénarès-Kyôto, 2007) and Raymond Figueras (Au pays des hommes-fleurs, 2010), this article shows how the tropical forest, grasped both as environment and physical “being,” holds travelers in its grip to the point of triggering visions and “journeys” close to the shamanic model.
