Le succès européen du Voyage sentimental peut se mesurer à l’ampleur des traductions (et des imitations) qui suivirent. Les premières traductions apparurent en allemand dès 1768 (Bode) et 1769 (Mittelstedt), en danois en 1775 (Birch), en hollandais en 1778 (Brunius), en suédois en 1791 (Ekmanson), en italien en 1792 et 1812 (Foscolo), en russe en 1793 (Kolmakov) et en 1803 (Domogatsky), en hongrois en1815 (Kazinczy), en 1821 en Espagne, etc. De très nombreuses retraductions furent faites au cours du xixe siècle.
