Abstract: Why does a director, who signs his texts and paintings, claim to need the assistance of a set designer? This article analyses ten performances produced over twenty-four years by Valère Novarina and illuminates the constant need for a rigorous ordering of spoken space. Thus, scenography is not the image that the spectator perceives but rather the scenic structure –sometimes invisible– which influences the way it is received in terms of the dramatic composition.
