Abstract: The role of « a man between two cultures », which Villers assumed during his life, does not only appear in his works, but also in his private correspondence. His exchange with Jean de Müller, which started in 1808, stands out from the rest of his correspondence and represents an imposing example of a style supposed to support his ambitions, that finally will also appear as its biggest obstacle. The analysis of this correspondence highlights the ways Villers insured the French German exchange while promoting himself.
