Abstract: The Golden Age, as described by Virgil, is echoed in places in Middle-earth that evoke the past. Tolkien's allusions to Virgil in these pages create a sense of nostalgia, on the part of his characters and the reader, for an ancient, idealized, or golden age. The evocation of this golden age is part of the historical theme of decline.
