Abstract: Chateaubriand's career developed at a time when the social and institutional structures of the Ancien Régime had been defeated by the developments that led to the Revolution. In this period of literary history without a dominant school, new communities were invented. From then on, his case questions literary sociabilities; it shows the variety and complexity of the "societies" that were the crucible of his works and his poetics.
