Abstract: The collection of the sixteenth-century Neapolitan poet Girolamo Angeriano rests on the paradox : “I am without voice and I speak” (Sum sine uoce, loquor). Under the influence of Stoicism, poetry becomes a veritable apprenticeship in patience and silence. Here, silence is deference to others and the interiorisation of adversity.
