Abstract: A number of medieval tales illuminate the theme of silence. Each time, silence is closely linked to the question of recognition or rather non-recognition by and of the voice. Silence and the incongruous overcoming of it can thus be identified as an ontological threshold : between culture and nature, identity and misunderstanding, life and death.
