Abstract: The essay is devoted to the serio ludere adopted by Northern Humanist from 1511 (Encomium Moriae) to 1520 (Ulrich von Hutten’s Bullicida) in their theological controversies. After an overview of Erasmus’ theory of serio ludere, the essay analyses in particular literary works concerning the defense of Johannes Reuchlin and Martin Luther.
