Abstract: The study aims to show how the staging of the sudden madness of the sage Pontanus in the dialogue Asinus by Giovanni Pontano offers a facetious rewriting of philosophical Ciceronian texts: we recognize the imprint of meditation on old age developed by Cicero in the Cato Maior and a reflection on the theory of personae exposed in the De officiis revisited on the serio-comic mode.
