Abstract: Thomas More’s Utopia has given rise to many naive interpretations, and even misunderstandings: for the playful dimension of the story has often been ignored, although it intends to be festivus. The author does address the most serious subjects, but without the heaviness of scholarly literature; he invents a demanding form of entertainment, not to arouse laughter but to stimulate the reader’s intelligence and daydreaming.
