Abstract: Roland Barthes did not write about the photo-novel. However, his footnote to a page in “Troisième sens. Notes de recherche sur quelques photogrammes de S.M. Eisenstein” is frequently cited by writers interested in it. It is necessary to reexplore Barthes’ oeuvre, particularly the works and articles that accord an important place to photography, this lyophilizate of thought, to give back the photo-novel depth and significance. Was Barthes a photo-novel reader?
