Conformément à sa vocation, l’article introductif de ce numéro en présente les objectifs et la démarche. On se propose d’offrir un nouveau panorama, représentatif mais non exhaustif, de l’œuvre de Roland Dorgelès en privilégiant des angles de vue différents. Les articles s’ordonnent de façon à dialoguer entre eux, à renouveler l’approche des écrits journalistiques, des œuvres romanesques, autobiographiques ou viatiques publiées ou inédites et à caractériser la poétique de Dorgelès.

True to its vocation, the introductory article of this issue presents its objectives and approach. The aim is to use various viewpoints to offer a new and representative–but not exhaustive–overview of Roland Dorgelès’s work. The articles are arranged so as to engage in dialogue with each other, to offer a new approach to his journalistic writings and his published and unpublished romanesque, autobiographical, and travel works, and to characterize Dorgelès’s poetics.

Les Bibliothèques d’Amiens Métropole conservent un important ensemble de documents imprimés, de manuscrits et de documents d’archives liés à Roland Dorgelès, qu’il soit montmartrois, combattant ou voyageur. À côté de l’information biographique fournie par certaines pièces, ce fonds en perpétuelle évolution, comportant quelques inédits, apporte un éclairage significatif sur 252le travail de l’écrivain à travers manuscrits autographes, épreuves corrigées et surtout notes et fiches de travail.

The Bibliothèques d’Amiens Métropole preserve an important collection of printed documents, manuscripts, and archival documents related to Roland Dorgelès: the Montmartre man, soldier, and traveler. In addition to the biographical information provided by certain items, this ever-changing collection, which includes some unpublished items, sheds significant light on the writer’s work via handwritten manuscripts, corrected proofs, and, above all, notes and worksheets.

Roland Dorgelès, écrivain prolixe, travaillé voire rongé par un petit nombre d’idées qui reviennent sans cesse sous sa plume, n’aura de cesse, au long de sa longue carrière, de s’auto-plagier. Ce travail explore la place importance que tient, dans ce processus créatif, ce que nous appelons l’auto-réécriture. L’analyse des différentes auto-réécritures éclaire non seulement la manière dont Dorgelès crée, mais aussi une grande partie des craintes, des angoisses et des espoirs de l’auteur.

Alexandre Leducq, “‘Also available from the same author’. Roland Dorgelès’s practice of self-rewriting”

Roland Dorgelès, a prolific writer, preoccupied and even gnawed at by a small number of ideas that kept coming out of his pen, would constantly plagiarize himself throughout his long career. This work explores the importance of what we call self-rewriting in this creative process. Analysis of different forms of self-rewriting sheds light not only on the way Dorgelès creates, but also on many of the author’s fears, anxieties, and hopes.

L’article retrace le parcours de l’homme et de l’écrivain en suivant le cours de son existence et de son œuvre. Il dresse le tableau d’un écrivain engagé tant dans la guerre que dans ses activités de journaliste et présente les positions et les interrogations qui furent les siennes dans bien des domaines et qu’expriment ses écrits virulents ou humoristiques. L’article évoque les facettes de son œuvre foisonnante et l’intérêt qui fut le sien pour des formes d’art comme le cinéma.

Mac Orlan and Dorgelès, exact contemporaries, met in Montmartre at the beginning of the twentieth century. They shared the same backgrounds, friendships, and experiences in journalistic and literary circles. The juxtaposition of their journeys and sensibilities constitutes a privileged occasion to reflect on the share of truth and mythology in the constitution of the Montmartrois bohemian of the Belle Époque, that singular object of our literary history.

En étudiant l’humour déployé par Dorgelès dans ses récits de guerre, cet article interroge l’idée selon laquelle la deuxième vague romanesque sur 1914 aurait opéré une libération du rire. Car l’analyse de leurs grands traits humoristiques, précoces ou tardifs (héritages, ambiguïtés politiques, procédés et fonctions, corrections) invite à relever les traces d’une patrimonialisation et d’une évolution politique reposant sur un glissement significatif vers le sérieux, l’ironie et l’antimilitarisme.

Nicolas Bianchi, “From Montmartre to the trenches, the wartime humor of Roland Dorgelès (1910–1930)”

Studying the humor deployed by Dorgelès in his war stories, this article questions the idea that the second romanesque wave in 1914 liberated laughter. In fact, analysis of their major humorous features, whether they appeared early or later (legacies, political ambiguities, procedures and functions, corrections), invites us to note the traces of a patrimonialization and a political evolution based on a significant shift toward seriousness, irony, and antimilitarism.

S’engage, dès la fin de 1918, une importante œuvre de reconstruction qu’évoque Roland Dorgelès dans Le Réveil des morts paru en 1923 chez Albin Michel. En confrontant ce roman avec des sources archivistiques et d’autres témoignages, cet article montre comment cette œuvre dresse un tableau très exact de la reconstruction menée dans le département de l’Aisne après 1918, précieux pour l’historien.

Philippe Nivet, “Roland Dorgelès and the first reconstruction”

The First World War left behind immense damage in northern and eastern France. At the end of 1918, important reconstruction work began, which Roland Dorgelès evokes in Le Réveil des morts, published in 1923 by Albin Michel. By comparing this novel with archival sources and other testimonies, this article shows how this work paints a very accurate picture of the reconstruction carried out in the Aisne department after 1918, which is of great value to historians.

Contributing variations on the East, Africa, Europe, and the USSR, Dorgelès brings in his own way a new dimension to the theme of a constantly evolving Elsewhere. This new exoticism puts an end both to an Elsewhere and to ideologies dreamed up by the literary imaginary. In the face of the crises that France experienced between the two world wars, his writings remind us of the glory of a country that, with the greatness of its colonial empire, should not buckle in the face of fascist threats.

From 1919 to 1973, Dorgelès worked with the Goncourt family, first as an unlucky runner-up to Proust and then as a member of the Académie. This exceptional longevity gave him a special status within the institution, which had been shaken by the war and various controversies: from a junior member to the doyen of the assembly, this novelist-journalist enabled the transition from the founding members of the institution to a modern era, while constantly reaffirming his loyalty to the Goncourt family.
