Abstract: This article contradicts a gendered reading of gothic novels that was dominant in Anglo-Saxon critique. Walter Scott paid homage to Clara Reeve and Ann Radcliffe and the press took inspiration from his critical articles and his arguments in their favor. The female characters in Ivanhoe pay homage to the female gothic novel while resolving, through history, the critical aporia caused by the representation of the supernatural.
