Abstract: A recent subgenre of popular fiction, urban fantasy endows urban space with the fantastic, making it the new site for the adventures of modern-day knights and magicians. In doing so, the subgenre is a continuation of nineteenth-century century urban fiction, updating the topoï of a Gothic imaginary of the city in order to do a better job of re-enchanting modernity while developing a social critique of the contemporary world.
