  • Abstract: In 1896, at the millennium festivities in Budapest, there were cultural and popular performances in the capital to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian state. Among the various exhibitions, people witnessed an African tribe installed in Budapest’s zoological garden. The article attempts to examine the possible interpretations of this show within the context of narrative identity, the narrative character of the images, and the possible meanings of urban space.
