Abstract: Probably a suicide, Segalen's death was as unusual as his creative output. The complete works of Shakespeare would be found next to him; a page from Hamlet was marked, and all signs indicate that the passage has some message intended for his wife. But critics have frequently been mistaken about the quotation, and it is interesting to come up with hypotheses about the reasons for their error before trying to guess which lines the poet chose.
