Abstract: The romantic vision is defined as a specific form of critique of capitalist modernity, on behalf of values and ideals from a precapitalist, premodern past. This article aims to show how the romantic spirit so defined lies at the heart of Lukács’s early writings between 1911 and 1917, at the time when he wrote The Theory of the Novel.
