Abstract: Gérard de Nerval adapts Han d’Islande by Victor Hugo for the stage in 1826. He might have hoped to achieve as big a success for this play as what he received for his translation of Goethe’s Faust. But his work never goes on the stage. Nevertheless, it is a daring interpretation of Hugo’s long gothic novel into a three-act revenge play.
