Abstract: Boileau found it necessary to legislate and censure, and thereby he established the parameters within which the literature of his time would be understood: the place and function that posterity would later confer upon his work was already inscribed in the very construct of the satirical work. The literary bipolarity that pits a dispassionate classicism against a polemical neo-classicism is no doubt what accounts for its richness.
