Abstract: Among the questions assessed by the first Dantean exegesis, the one concerning the origin, the nature and the disposition of the rivers, lakes and sources crossed by Dante and Vergil has drawn a great deal of attention. The study analyses how Giovanni Boccaccio commented on these passages, pointing out his sources and showing how he extensively reused texts from his own Latin works. From the same perspective, this paper studies Benvenuto da Imola’s Comentum, to illustrate his peculiar way of using Boccaccio’s works as a source in commenting Dante.
