Abstract: In the Commedia, over the cantiche, we meet several female characters wearing a crown. They are queens from ancient history or legends, Jewish queens, empresses as well as princesses contemporary to the poet. This essay aims to analyze how Dante portrays power when embodied by women, thus also trying to discover whether he employs any peculiar interpretative pattern when describing “femininity in command”.
