Christian Trottmann, “Dante’s hope and the presence of Saint Bernard in the first three songs of Paradise”
By focusing upon the presence of Saint Bernard, Dante’s ultimate guide at the end of Paradise, the study aims to frame the experience of travel in the double hope of earthly peace thanks to an emperor capable of bringing peace and a theological hope linked to the beatific vision. The Saint, reformer of monasticism and heralding the eschatological return of the Christ, perfectly combines these two aspects. His function of intercession with Mary links the creation, the Incarnation and the Trinity.
Keywords: Dante Alighieri, Medieval theology, Saint Bernard, Joachim of Flore, Medieval prophecy.
Claudia Di Fonzo, “The most human of virtues and the most perfect of sciences. The Convivio and the juridical dantism”
The reconstruction of the draft of the Convivio’s fifteen treaties emphasizes the two concluding treatises, which should have dealt with justice and wisdom. The treatises dedicated to ethical virtues, from V to XIII, are said to have been written on the basis of the fourth, based on the fourth book of Ethica Nicomachea. The moral canzone of the fourth treatise and its subject were noticed by the lawyer Bartolo da Sassoferrato, who knew the song, but not the commentary.
Keywords: Dante Alighieri, Convivio, medieval law, medieval prophecy, Nicomachean Ethics.
Roberto Mercuri, “Lecture of Inferno XVI-XVII”
Reading the two cantos XVI and XVII of Hell becomes an opportunity to redefine the idea of the « central cantos » of the poem. The cantos XVII of the canticas are read in parallel between the « center » and the « circle » and suggest new perspectives. The hunting metaphor, which runs through Dante’s entire work, becomes a key to re-read Gerione’s episode, from the evocation through the rope to the construction of the character itself, between biblical suggestions and mythological echoes.
Keywords: Dante Alighieri, medieval littérature, Comedy’s structure, mythological characters, biblical memory.
Viviana Agostini-Ouafi, “Philology, genesis and poetics of translating. The exemplary case of André Pézard”
The Pézard’s holdings of the College de France stands out with drafts, clean-ups, typing and translation proofs of Vita Nuova. It illustrates Pezard’s translatological conscience, the scientific scope and his philological, genetic and poetic rigor. It makes us question the life and work of a translator-philologist who changed his attitude to translating from 1953 to 1965. The study of the pre-texts showcases the modalities of his ante litteram post-structuralist approach.
Keywords: Dante Alighieri, philology, translation theory, italian literature, poetic translation.
